Why did Britain decide not to continue purchasing or producing North American P-51 Mustangs after World War II, and how might events have unfolded differently had it done so until the war with Japan concluded?

Why would we buy P-51 Mustangs when De Havilland were building these sexy beasts?

The DH.100 Vampire.

It didn’t have the range of a Mustang, but it could climb higher and faster, and had a top speed of 548mph - 108mph faster than the P-51D.

We also had these.

The Gloster Meteor.

The Meteor could do 600mph, climb at 7,000 feet per minute against the Mustang’s 3,200, and fly higher.

Who would want Mustangs when both of these could fly higher and faster?
